Philippines plans to auction 2 GW of renewable energy

The Department of Energy in the Philippines has announced an auction to award 2 GW of renewable energy capacity. The country’s authorities aim to contract 1,260 MW of PV, 380 MW of wind power, 230 MW of biomass, and 130 MW of hydropower capacity through the procurement process. The province of Luzon is predicted to receive approximately 900 MW, while the provinces of Visayas and Mindanao are slated to receive 260 and 100 MW, respectively.

The Philippines has a cumulative installed power generation capacity of approximately 20 GW, with 14.3 GW in the Luzon region, location to the country’s three main grids. Visayas and Mindanao have the next two largest networks. By 2030, the country intends to install 15 GW of clean energy.

Earlier in February 2021, the Department of Energy renewed its renewable energy targets in its latest National Renewable Energy Program (NREP). From a 54 per cent target by 2040, announced in December 2020, the updated NREP proposed a target of 55.8 per cent by 2040 and 37.3 per cent by 2030. The current NREP, spanning from 2011 to 2030, targets to bring the share of RE to 35 per cent by the end of that period.
